Donations boost for charity fund
A CHARITY fund set up for research into motor neurone disease has been boosted by a Morpeth donation.
The Scott Bell Fund has received £500 from the Newcastle Building Society after it was nominated by staff at the Morpeth branch.
The charity was set up last May by former semi-professional footballer Scott Bell, who played at numerous local clubs, after he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease at the age of 33.
Half of the money raised is donated to the Motor Neurone Disease Association for research, with the rest set aside to support Scott and his family.
Mr Bell said: “We never imagined that our fund-raising work would take off so quickly, or that we would raise so much in such a short space of time, but we’ve had a huge amount of support from so many different people and have a lot more in the pipeline for the coming months.
“We’re really grateful to the Morpeth branch staff for thinking about us and nominating our charity in this way.”
The money was awarded through the society’s Community Fund at the Community Foundation.
Morpeth Branch Manager Katie Johnston said: “As a community-based branch we know the people and the organisations in the area well so it’s great to be able to support one so close to us as we often hear about the good work the charity is carrying out. We understand how hard it is to fund-raise in this challenging economic climate so to be in a position where we can help kick-start the 2012 fund-raising year is rewarding for our branch and the staff within it.”
