A STANNINGTON business has landed another meaty prize in a prestigious national competition.

Three gold stars, the highest rating possible in the Great Taste Awards, have again been given to Moorhouse Farm Shop in Stannington Station for its home-reared Northumbrian beef sirloin joint.

Judges said: “It was very moist and tender with an excellent beefy flavour – we could almost taste the field the beef was reared in.”

Ian and Victoria Byatt set up their farm shop nine years ago and this is the fifth time it has won a top gold award in the contest, which is organised by The Guild of Fine Food.

Previously, they have been recognised for their home-cured bacon, sausages and pies, all made by hand on site.

Mr Byatt said: “This shows that small local producers can compete with the very best from around the country. It’s a great reward for the team at Moorhouse Farm Shop, who produce a fantastic range using the meat from our own farm.

“Our regular customers already appreciate our quality and to be recognised as one of the best in such a high profile national competition makes it even better. It’s a great advert for the quality of the beef we produce in Northumberland as well.”

This year’s awards attracted a record number of entries from all over the UK, all of which were blind-tasted, tested and discussed by 350 judges comprising of food writers, chefs, deli and farm shop owners and other food producers.

From almost 9,000 entries, only 120 were awarded the highest rating of three gold stars.
