A MORPETH sports club will get a funding boost from its latest environmental drive.

Solar panels have been fitted on to the roof of the greenkeepers’ shed at Morpeth Golf Club following a successful application to Barclays Bank.

Town business The Solar Energy Centre designed and installed the solar photo voltaic system, which is expected to meet at least half of the organisation’s electricity needs.

As well as cutting energy costs, it will earn some income using the Government’s feed in Clean Energy Cashback Scheme.

Morpeth Golf Club Manager Terry Minett said: “Going green in this way not only provides commercial and domestic property owners with a clean source of power generation to give them considerable savings on energy bills, but actually makes them money by feeding back into the national grid any electricity their system develops that is surplus to their own needs.

“The installation should provide the club with a 19.4 percent return on investment over 25 years.”

The Solar Energy Centre designed a 10 kilowatt PV system powered by 42 solar panels, with both businesses keen to work together.

Barclays Business Manager Sara Morrison said: “We were able to support Morpeth Golf Club with this initiative as it has a strong management team with a good track record.

“It’s great to see it thriving in the current economic climate and making plans which will ensure the sustainability of the club in years to come.”
