Jobs saved by power station sale

THE long-awaited sale of Lynemouth Power Station has been completed, securing around 120 jobs.

The facility was put up for sale by aluminium company Rio Tinto Alcan last autumn, along with the neighbouring smelter.

While no buyer could be found for the smelter, negotiations have been ongoing for some time with energy company RWE to take over the power station.

And yesterday it was announced that a deal had been signed.

The coal-fired station opened in 1972 to provide power for the smelter and National Grid and is one of the most thermally efficient of its kind in the UK.

Permission was recently secured to convert it to biomass and RWE is investigating the possibility, with a decision due early next year.

The plant will be operated under the name Lynemouth Power.

Rio Tinto Regional Economic Development Director John McCabe said: “Lynemouth Power Station served our business very well over the years and since the closure of the smelter we’ve been determined to complete the sale in order to continue the plant operations.

“We wish everyone at the plant all the best for the future under RWE’s ownership.”
