New study shows scale of housing needs in county

DETAILS about future residential property requirements in Northumberland have been revealed.

The results of the first county-wide housing needs study have now been published.

They include information on affordable housing – a minimum of 242 will have to be built every year for the next 10 years to meet demand.

It is proposed that this will be a mixture of social rented housing and intermediate housing, such as shared ownership.

A survey was carried out last year and about 6,000 county residents responded. Secondary data such as house price information, private rent levels and housing supply and availability were also used for the Northumberland Housing Needs Assessment.

Coun Tom Brechany, executive member responsible for housing, said: “The information contained within the report has strengthened the council’s understanding of the nature and influence of the housing market and sub-markets across the county, and will provide council staff and other stakeholders with valuable insight into the housing needs and demands across Northumberland.”

Local authorities are required to have up-to-date robust surveys to assist them in developing housing and planning policies.

The assessment can be accessed via the county council’s website – www.northumberland.gov.uk
