Top tips at food event

CATERING and food retail businesses can learn how to increase their portion of the market at an annual occasion that has plenty of attractions.

The Northumberland Food Event is taking place on Tuesday.

It will feature an exhibition, seminars and cooking demonstrations. There will be an opening address by Lord Curry of Kirkharle, who is currently chairman of the Royal Veterinary College and has been involved in overseeing the government’s strategy for sustainable farming and food.

The seminars offer a unique opportunity to gain practical business advice from local experts.

Jane Pickett of Offstone Publishing will be advising on how you can use marketing, brand recognition and public relations to benefit your business.

Deb Humble, owner of Country Concierge Services, will be giving practical hints and tips on running a small tourism business and Lisa Kennedy from Food Tech Solutions and Vivien Montgomery of the county council’s public protection service will be giving a presentation about the importance of food hygiene and how to improve your food hygiene rating score.

Attendees can be inspired by the demonstrations from some experienced professional cooks.

These include a Breakfast Masterclass and the preparation of a range of mouth-watering fish dishes by award-winning chef David Kennedy.

They also have the opportunity to benefit from meeting other market leaders, industry experts and suppliers in the exhibitions hall.

Northumberland County Council’s Executive Member for Health and Public Protection, Anita Romer, said: “This one-day event is the third of its kind organised by the authority’s public protection service and it aims to inspire caterers with lots of practical ideas to help businesses improve not only the food they offer, but also their profitability.”

The free event will take place on Tuesday at the Holiday Inn, Seaton Burn, from 9am to 3pm. Businesses are welcome to come for the whole day or just drop in for a couple of hours.

To register for it, go to www.nfe2013.eventbrite.co.uk or call 01670 623782. For more information, including a timetable of demonstrations and seminars, visit www.northumberlandfood network.org.uk
