Village to play part in future plans

COUNCILLORS are encouraged about the role Pegswood will play in a major initiative that will help shape the future of the village.

Work has begun to discover the priority issues for the Morpeth Neighbourhood Plan, which will have an input on the scale of new developments, where properties and commercial buildings will be constructed and what kind of projects should take place in the town and its surrounding communities.

Consultation events have been held and four groups – housing, local economy, heritage and local environment – have been set up to discuss each subject in more detail. Other cross-cutting themes such as transport, infrastructure, education and sports and leisure will be examined as well.

Pegswood residents are among those involved and parish councillors discussed what they have talked about in early meetings.

Coun Alan Sambrook, who is part of the housing group, said: “I was able to set out the position for Pegswood, saying that we would welcome some development as long as it’s mixed and appropriate for the community.

“All the groups will need to constantly keep each other informed because as we go further into the process, the issues we talk about will often cover two or three subjects.”

Efficient drainage systems were identified by Coun David Woodard as most important before new housing developments get the go-ahead in the village.

The authority’s Vice Chair, Julie Stephenson, is a member of the local economy group.

She said there are patches of brownfield land that could be developed and provide jobs in industries that do not have much of a presence in Northumberland at the moment to help some young adults stay in the area.

She added: “Itwas encouraging that Pegswood is seen as an important part of the neighbourhood plan and it’s now up to us and the residents who are involved to set out what we want the village to look like in the future.”
