WORK has started on long-awaited improvements at a key Morpeth junction.

A range of changes at the point where Shields Road meets Coopies Lane, which is next to Morpeth railway station, will make it easier and safer to navigate for cars, pedestrians and cyclists alike.

They include widening the junction itself, landscaping the old builder’s yard eyesore and removing confusing signs and unnecessary road markings.

Footpaths are being widened, especially at the dangerous pinch points under the railway bridge, a new path will be constructed on the south side of Coopies Lane and a new pedestrian refuge is to be built on the A192 immediately north of Kingswell. This will make it easier to cross the A192.

Cyclists on this busy road will also benefit as a cycle lane will be reinstated, with a strong green surface treatment.

County and town councillor for Stobhill, Ian Lindley, has been working to secure these improvements for years.

He said: “I know that residents and visitors will be happy with the final product here. It has been a struggle to secure this investment, so I’m really pleased that the work has started at last.

“The A192 is a key gateway to Morpeth and Northumberland, and the railway station area is the first view of our county for many people. This work, together with the new car park we have just completed and the improvements at the station itself, means that at last this area will look the part and work well for all users.”
