RESIDENTS are being urged to help increase the number of fresh meat suppliers in Ponteland.
Butchers and farm shops are seeing a quite considerable increase in customers since the recent revelations about horsemeat in some supermarket beef products and Muriel Sobo has called on the public to start or continue supporting local meat traders.
She said: “There used to be five butchers in Ponteland, an abattoir and even a mart until a few years ago. Do we care enough about the food we eat? A population of over 11,000 should be able to support more than one butcher (Alan Newton on Merton Way).”
