A HIGH-FLYING Ponteland student is on the road to engineering success after scooping a top scholarship.

Rachel Smedley has been named one of the UK’s brightest young engineers after winning the Institution of Mechanical Engineers/AMEC Undergraduate Scholarship.

The award will see the 18-year-old receive £1,000 a year towards her Mechanical Engineering degree at Leeds University, as well as complete a work placement at AMEC.

The scholarship was presented at a ceremony in London.

Institution of Mechanical Engineers President Isobel Pollock said: “Rachel is one of the most promising young engineers in the UK and I hope this scholarship and placement at AMEC can help her on her way to a hugely-successful engineering career.

“The country, and indeed the world’s future, depends on the ingenuity of the next generation of engineers like Rachel.”
