A THERAPIST has set up her own Morpeth business to help people’s mind, body and spirit.

Esther Laverick swapped a career in the NHS to become a holistic therapist, using a range of techniques to complement conventional medical treatments.

Patchouli Holistic Therapies and Gifts opened in Newgate Street after Mrs Laverick finally found the premises she was looking for by chance.

“I had been searching for somewhere to run my business venture for a little while and I’d looked at a few places, but nothing felt right,” she said.

“Then one day I was walking down Newgate Street thinking ‘I simply want a decent room to rent’ and when I looked up a saw a sign for this place. Even though it was a bit messy, I felt peaceful and calm and decided this was the place for me.

“Many of the people who have come here since I opened have said they feel the same.

“Hopefully this will be a success. I believe that people are starting to look more towards alternative therapies and a more natural approach rather than only taking pills and medicines.”

The Broomhill resident was previously a scientist with the NHS in the field of histopathology, the microscopic examination of tissue in order to study the manifestations of disease.

In 2008 she decided to put her interest in holistic therapy into practice by doing a one-year course at Northumberland College. She then did another year studying crystal therapy and worked at a business in Ashington before starting her own venture.

Mrs Laverick said: “I always tell clients that they need to see a doctor first to receive a diagnosis and I will then complement medical treatment by releasing stress as it makes many conditions worse.

“To my knowledge I’m the only practising crystal therapist in Morpeth and a major positive about this therapy is that it’s suitable for everyone, with some conditions you need permission from a GP to do massage therapies.”

The 36-year-old, who is married to David with a daughter called Emma, offers aromatherapy massage, reflexology, reiki, crystal therapy and Indian head massage.

She also sells a range of gifts, and tarot card reading and hot stone massage should be available soon.
