A STANNINGTON-based holiday specialist is set for an expansion as it is now offering trips to see stunning skies at night.

Activities Abroad has launched The Aurora Zone – 10 holidays based around experiencing the wonder of the Northern Lights at a time when NASA is forecasting the best Auroras for 50 years.

Director Alistair McLean, Marketing Manager Steph Eddy and the company’s Product Development Managers spent time in Norway, Finland and Sweden earlier this year.

They researched accommodation, transportation and other optional activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling, tours of the Ice Hotel, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and more.

Aurora experts have been brought in to explain the phenomenon and to help travellers photograph the lights.

The latest technology has been used to predict the weather and Auroral forecasts as well as locate the best viewpoints.

Mr McLean said: “We have been taking parties on activity holidays to Norway, Finland and Sweden for eight years so we know first hand that to see the Northern Lights is a stunning experience.

“Many of our holiday makers tell us they are among their most treasured memories, so it made sense to organise dedicated Northern Lights holidays.

“One of the most impressive aspects of the experience is the fact that the lights are never the same twice since they change depending on the ferocity of the sun’s activity, solar winds and the altitude at which they collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere.”

Activities Abroad arranges activity holidays in 18 countries and employs 10 staff from its base.

It anticipates that the launch of The Aurora Zone will create two new jobs at its head office and three more in Scandinavia.
