One of Morpeth’s oldest family businesses is preparing for the biggest sale in its history, with discounts on almost £750,000 worth of stock.

Landmark department store Rutherfords of Morpeth will be reducing every item of its stock to make way for new lines and celebrate its refurbishment.

The shop, which has served Morpeth for 169 years through five generations of the Rutherford family, will close at the end of trading tomorrow to complete the revamp over the next few days.

New departments and ranges will be introduced, along with electronic till points.

Managing Director Richard Rutherford said: “This is an exciting time for us as Morpeth will never have known a sale like this. It is the biggest sale we have ever had.”

The store will re-open to loyal customers and invited guests at 10am on Wednesday for a two-day private sale, before opening to the general public on Friday, June 19.

Mr Rutherford said: “We have always had a strong presence on the Morpeth high street and that is where we intend to remain for many years to come.

“We are a progressive company that wants to keep moving forward and maintain our premier position as Northumberland’s flagship department store.

“We have always been proud of our position on the Morpeth high street and we want to maintain that. We are a family business, which has been part of Morpeth for a long time, and we plan to be around for many years into the future.”

He added: “Now the country has come out of one of the worst retail recessions in history, it’s important to constantly improve what we do and offer the best shopping experience that we can, with exciting new lines and good customer service.”

The Bridge Street business prides itself as a ‘lifestyle store’, stocking fashions, furnishings, cookwear, shoes, cosmetics and handbags.
