MORPETH’S new promotional brand is helping the environment with re-useable shopping bags now ready for action.
The More in Morpeth initiative was launched by the Chamber of Trade last year and since then a logo and slogan has been drawn up and a website put together to promote the town as a shopping and tourist destination.
Its latest project is to fund Bags for Life and they will be available for the first time at an independent traders event in the Market Place this Saturday.
Chamber Chairman John Beynon said: “This is another positive scheme for the town.
“As well as promoting Morpeth, they will benefit the environment because shoppers will not need to use plastic bags.”
Morpeth Mayor Phil Taylor will be on hand at the Bags for Life stall for part of the day.
“These bags tie in nicely with the town council’s campaign for a plastic bag free town,” he said.
“There was a good response from members of the public and businesses when plans for the bags were announced, so hopefully everyone in the town will get on board.
“They will definitely come in handy for Christmas shopping.”
The traders event, which will run from 10am to 4pm, will include food, crafts, gifts and jewellery stalls among others.
Some will be handing out discount vouchers to spend in their shop on the day.
The Bags for Life are priced £2.50 and a number of independent stores will be stocking them from next week.
