GOVERNMENT plans to simplify energy tariffs by forcing firms to offer just four core tariffs for both gas and electricity has been welcomed by a Northumberland MP.
They will include a fixed term and a standard variable rate, with two others based on criteria such as payment method or whether renewable energy is a factor.
The proposals will dramatically reduce the vast number of tariffs currently available – around 410.
In response, Berwick MP Sir Alan Beith said: “With the huge number of energy tariffs available, it is impossible for most people to know whether they are getting a good deal for their money on their gas and electricity bills.
“I hope these proposals will mean that all households across Northumberland will be able to get the best deal for their gas and electricity.”
