A wine merchant is toasting social media success as its Mothers’ Day joke nears the million mark.
Bin21, which has shops in Morpeth’s Bridge Street and Hexham, set out a humorous message on its A-boards, inviting customers to: ‘Buy Mum a nice bottle of something. Remember, you’re the reason she drinks’.
Manager Patrick Eyres posted a picture of the sign on the business’ Facebook page, never imagining the worldwide response that would follow.
Within a week, almost 400,000 people had viewed the image, and when it was posted on the Morpeth Matters site, another 400,000 had a look.
Now Bin21 is getting messages from America, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, the Netherlands and Poland, and the picture has been shared almost 7,000 times.
“We had no idea this would happen,” said Mr Eyres.
“We thought we might get a couple of thousand views, but it has just gone crazy. We had more than 120,000 views on Saturday alone.
“We are getting so many comments from across the globe and we’ve had a large amount of hits on our website.
“Now we hope we can do something similar on a more regular basis, perhaps every month. It’s great fun.”
