Staff at a prestigious Northumberland hotel have bucked the industry trend by notching up 266 years of service between them.
Matfen Hall, the ancestral home of Sir Hugh and Lady Blackett, opened as a prestigious four-star hotel with golf club and spa 15 years ago.
Not only are seven of its initial employees still there, but a further 10 staff members recently celebrated a decade of service in all areas of the hotel.
John Harrison was one of the earliest starters, joining the golf club 20 years ago before the hotel itself had opened, while Keith Maxwell – manager of golf club restaurant The Keepers’ Lodge – joined the team 13 years ago.
Mr Maxwell, who started as a night porter, then did day shifts in the main hotel before moving to the restaurant, said: “It’s a lovely place to work. The owners and management are great and I get to meet lovely people, not just the hotel residents and golf club members but passers-by who call in for lunch or drinks.”
