TRADERS have been urged to make the most of a major marketing initiative to show that there is More In Morpeth.

The Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade set up the promotional campaign in 2010 to provide a brand for all local businesses to use.

A chamber working group enlisted the help of Beach Design to create a logo and it was hoped that the slogan and branding would become as recognisable as the regional Passionate People, Passionate Places campaign.

A website was created, local taxi companies began to use the logo and More In Morpeth bags for life were sold in town shops.

The initiative, which promotes Morpeth for shopping, leisure, dining and accommodation, is still going strong and the Herald reported last month that more than 20,000 colour leaflets displaying the brand were being distributed across the North East to show what the town has to offer.

At the latest chamber meeting, Ken Stait, who is the group’s lead member for marketing, emphasised the importance of spreading the campaign to businesses across the town.

“I can’t stress enough that we need to extend how we link the More in Morpeth brand with the traders on the high street,” he said.

“This goes to the core of what Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade is about. We are here to promote businesses at the heart of Morpeth and encourage them as much as needed.

“We have a strong More In Morpeth website, but we have to link this with the retailers at the front end and enable customers to see the brand, which will promote town-centre shops.”

Mr Stait said that members had not been able to put as much time and energy into updating the website as much as the chamber had initially envisaged due to the lack of time and resources, but this was now being addressed by member Nic Best and the Town Team partnership, which includes the chamber, Morpeth Town Council and the Greater Morpeth Development Trust.

He reported that various promotional activities have already taken place using the brand, such as Italian markets, and that the Town Team will deliver more events in the next 12 months.

He added: “For the next year we need to focus on delivering enhanced benefits from the More In Morpeth scheme to retailers.

“We need to make it so that More In Morpeth is a real reason for them to engage with the chamber and join the chamber, and for the chamber to re-focus its core function of getting trade into the town and helping the retailers of Morpeth.”
