An apprentice has walked away with a top prize at this year’s Northumberland Business Awards.

Matthew Wanless, who works at leading global hygiene and forest products company, SCA Hygiene, in Prudhoe, was selected by judges as the winner of this year’s Apprentice of the Year.

Matthew is in his final year of an advanced modern apprenticeship in manufacturing engineering and has completed many internal courses.

Ian Callender, apprentice team leader, said: “I am chuffed to bits for him.

“We had two lads in the final four so I’m so pleased that Matthew won and one of our lads took home the prize. He is very highly thought of and has an inquisitive mind and a very high attention to detail.”

Matthew added: “The apprenticeship is brilliant. I get to learn a lot more from being hands on and I am pleased I’ve been able to do it with SCA Hygiene.”

Judges praised Matthew’s dedication and commitment.

Matthew beat competition from fellow SCA apprentice Ryan Keates, Matthew Boucheron from the Port of Blyth, and Liann Smith, from Brucegate Dental Practice, to win the award, which was sponsored by Northumberland College.
