ONE lucky shopper got more than she bargained for when she called into Morpeth town centre.
Margaret Sinkinson, who lives in the town, picked up a host of goodies when she became Sanderson Arcade’s eight millionth customer.
Arcade staff broke the news and she was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a hamper from The Corbridge Larder.
Mrs Sinkinson said: “This kind of thing never happens to me. I couldn’t believe it when I was told I was the eight millionth customer at the arcade. I’ve certainly got a story to tell now.”
Centre Manager Medi Parry said: “We have been monitoring the footfall counters closely over the last couple of days as it was very close to the milestone of hitting eight million.
“We are delighted that it’s one of our many local, loyal customers we’ve had the opportunity to thank as the eight millionth customer.
“It’s a great milestone for the team here at the arcade and I think we’ll be planning something really special for our ten millionth customer as well.”
The arcade was re-built by Dransfield Properties and was officially opened by Joanna Lumley in November 2009.
By June the following year, the award-winning centre greeted its millionth customer. A second phase was opened in 2011, increasing footfall and attracting retailers such as Hobbs and Monsoon, and Ms Parry has recently been named Centre Manager of the Year in the national SCEPTRE awards.
The arcade is now one of the leading partners in managing Morpeth’s markets and earlier this month helped to organise the first Morpeth Food and Drink Festival.
