One of the region’s rising rugby stars was on hand to officially open a £300,000 facility at a Northumberland hotel.

The Aqua Vitae Spa is the latest development in a rolling programme of investment at Matfen Hall and it was recently given a sporting seal of approval by 20-year-old Tom Penny, who has made his mark on the Newcastle Falcons’ first XV team this season.

At the heart of the new spa is a thermal suite designed to improve circulation and soothe both body and soul, with an aromatherapy room – complete with mood lighting and aromatherapy essences – a steam room and a sauna.

There is also an ice bucket shower and ice fountains to cool the body temperature and wash away toxins and a multi-headed monsoon shower, offering a choice of temperatures and water patterns.

In addition, hotel residents, day guests and spa members alike can enjoy full use of the 16m UV-filtrated swimming pool and spa pool along with a range of treatments, facials and massages in candlelit treatment rooms.

Mr Penny, who lives in Matfen village, said: “When I’m not playing rugby I’m playing golf, so from now on, whether I’ve had a long day on the pitch or on the greens, I am looking forward to unwinding in these fabulous new facilities.”
