TWO initiatives are encouraging residents to visit more independent traders in Northumberland this Saturday.
Shop Local Saturday is calling on people to support their small businesses and it is being promoted in Morpeth by Varleys fruit shop and Lavenders Blue.
This has developed from the worldwide American Express Shop Small scheme.
Some of the independents taking part will be doing special offers or promoting products on the day as well.
Christine Ogle, of Varleys fruit shop and Lavenders Blue, said: “Here in Morpeth, we have a nice high street with a good selection of shops.
“The independent businesses have got a lot to offer and shoppers can avoid the hustle and bustle of Newcastle and the MetroCentre.
“We hope that people will try shops they haven’t visited before and they could well be pleasantly surprised.”
Meanwhile, Anne-Marie Trevelyan, Conservative parliamentary candidate for Berwick-upon-Tweed, is supporting Small Business Saturday UK, saying that it is a ‘fantastic opportunity’ for residents to give their local butchers, bakers, cafes and retailers a try if they have not done so already.
