MORPETH Mayor Ken Brown has become the first to try a tipple at the town’s newest bar.

The civic head cut the ribbon at The Electrical Wizard in New Market on Tuesday.

The JD Wetherspoon pub was opened after a £785,000 refurbishment of the former Szoda Bar.

It will provide 53 jobs and specialises in real ales, with beers from local and regional brewers.

The pub is named after Dr Walford Bodie, known as The Electrical Wizard of the North, who brought his magic tricks to the venue in its former days as the Coliseum cinema.

A large chandelier recreates the grandeur of the old theatre, while photographs and information boards tell its history.
