A TOP Morpeth chef has been named keynote speaker for the Northumberland Food Event.

Northeast Chef of the Year 2007 David Kennedy, who is Executive Chef at the Black Door Group, with restaurants in Morpeth and Newcastle, will be top of the bill at the caterers’ event in March.

The one-day session aims to inspire the county’s caterers with practical demonstrations from local chefs and advice on developing menus, marketing, advertising and front of house skills.

Businesses of all sizes are expected to benefit and will have the chance to meet local food manufacturers and other people in the trade.

It is being organised by the Business Support Team in Northumberland County Council’s Public Protection Service to improve the quality of food.

Mr Kennedy said: “I am delighted to be invited to be a key presenter at this innovative catering event bringing together business leaders, suppliers, chefs, managers and front of house staff from all sectors of the hospitality industry throughout Northumberland.”

Alongside Mr Kennedy, will be North East Food and Drink Group and Northumbrian Larder Chairman Henry Roberts to give demonstrations, award-winning restaurateur Andy Hook, who will speak about business development and innovation, and marketing specialist Helen Spark, who leads the Northumberland Tourism Made In Northumberland project.

Vicky Bradford of Northumberland College will present on front of house service.

The council is contacting more than 1,800 businesses to invite them to attend the event, which is free to caterers.

Council Executive Member for Public Protection Alan Thompson said: “The event has attracted some key figures from the food industry who are willing to share their vast knowledge and experience with our Northumberland caterers.

“It promises to be a great day with the opportunity to learn from those experts in the food industry and from those involved in marketing and finance, all skills in business.

“We are encouraging caterers to book early to avoid disappointment as places are limited.”

The event will take place at Linden Hall near Longhorsley on Tuesday, March 1.
