Wetherspoon moves into Morpeth

PUB chain JD Wetherspoon has confirmed that it is finally moving into Morpeth.

Rumours have been circulating for years that the pub giant was planning to open up in the town.

And now the company has confirmed that it has taken over the Szoda Bar premises in New Market.

The new pub, which will create 35 full and part-time jobs, will be named The Electrical Wizard, harking back to the building’s former days as the Coliseum when Scottish-born entertainer Dr Walford Bodie performed his shocking magic tricks, using electricity, at the venue.

The smartly-dressed colourful character, with his waxed handle-bar moustache, has inspired both the name and concept for the pub.

Builders moved onto site last month to begin a £785,000 refurbishment. When completed, the pub will have plush fabrics, extensive timberwork, a fireplace and panelling, as well as a large chandelier fitted into a recessed ceiling void to recreate the grandeur of the theatre.

JD Wetherspoon Chief Executive John Hutson said: “We are very much looking forward to opening a pub in Morpeth.

“We have enjoyed great success in the region and believe that our new pub will be welcomed by people of all ages and that it will be a great addition to the town.

“As well as investing in the re-development of the former bar, Wetherspoon will also be creating approximately 35 new jobs.”

The pub is expected to open on March 15.
