ALMOST £500,000 has been awarded to a carers’ support group to help run services for the next five years.
Carers Northumberland has received the grant from the Big Lottery Reaching Communities Fund.
The funding will enable the charity to offer individual support to carers through information, sign-posting to specialist services, skills development, events and activities.
Support staff will work with employers to help working carers and the organisation will also work with GP practices to improve carer support for their patients.
Carers Northumberland Chief Executive Sandi Downing said: “Carers Northumberland is delighted to receive this award from Big Lottery Reaching Communities.
“This money offers us increased opportunities to provide direct support to carers through activities and events around the county.”
There are about 36,000 carers in Northumberland who look after friends and family members who depend on them due to illness, disability, frailty or drug or alcohol misuse. More than 7,000 of the carers provide more than 50 hours of care every week.
