A STALWART of the Morpeth walking community has finally picked up his prestigious honour.

Colin Harvey was named among four people to be recognised in this year’s Morpeth Town Council Citation Awards for his exceptional service to the environment.

But while other winners Mike Bateman, Willie Hartill and Richard Nash were presented with their awards at the council’s annual assembly last month, Mr Harvey had a longer wait as he was on holiday at the time.

However, he was finally able to receive the accolade from Mayor Phil Taylor during a presentation at a British Citizenship Ceremony in Morpeth Town Hall last week.

Mr Harvey is Vice-Chairman and Environmental Director of the Greater Morpeth Development Trust and a member of Morpeth Footpaths Society.

He was instrumental in setting up the town’s walking festival and has been a leading figure in the Castles, Woods and Water project to improve footpaths and provide better access to the local environment.

He said: “It was a nice surprise to get this award.”
