THE annual Christmas collection is under way at a Morpeth community group.
Morpeth Lions Club is collecting cash at the town’s Morrisons’ supermarket this week to buy Christmas food parcels for the elderly and needy of the area.
The club previously asked shoppers to donate tins of food, but now money is collected and the Lions make up parcels.
In the 26 years the scheme has been running at least 5,000 parcels have been delivered and this year the club expects to dish out 200. It estimates it will need to raise around £2,200 to cover the costs.
Richard Nash, who organises the collection with Robin Cooper, said: “We fully appreciate that at this time of year everyone is being asked to help many worthy causes and we are always delighted by the response we get.
“Those who receive the Christmas food gifts have been identified by a number of local agencies as being in need. We know the pleasure that the parcels bring.
“We are grateful to Morrisons and to the public for their generosity.”
