Community pot safe from cuts

A FUNDING pot for community groups in Northumberland is being maintained.

Despite having to make £45million in savings for 2011/12, the county council’s Community Chest will stay at £300,000.

The scheme is open to any voluntary or community not-for-profit groups based in, or predominantly serving, Northumberland.

Grants of up to £10,000 are available with no minimum amount for applications. The money will be divided equally between the North, South East and West areas of the county.

It can be used for a range of purposes from events to the purchase of equipment.

A council spokesman said: “The Community Chest has proved a very popular source of funding for many communities around the county and funded projects have already brought a wide range of benefits to the area and its people.

“In the past two years, the funding provided through this scheme has helped many organisations to attract over £3m of additional external funding.

“We are always particularly keen to hear from any organisations, or about new projects who have not previously received funding through the scheme.”
