FRAUDSTERS are targeting the Morpeth public and trying to sell fake advertising space.
Police have warned people to be wary of the scam following a call to a Morpeth resident in which the offender claimed to be selling advertising space in a Northumbria Police magazine.
The caller hung up before any details were passed on.
Morpeth Neighbourhood Sergeant Dave Simpson said: “Northumbria Police does not ask for donations from members of the public or businesses and does not canvas for advertising.
“If you receive a call of this nature it is not legitimate and you should not give out your bank details. Contact the police or Trading Standards.
“Just because a caller says they’re from the police doesn’t necessarily mean they are and we’d always urge people to check that the caller is genuine. If they are, they won’t mind being asked for ID. If you’re still in doubt ring the company they claim to be from and check.”
Anyone with information about the scam should contact police on 03456 043043, ext 69191.
