Appeal for help to trap cash thief

POLICE are appealing for help from travel agents, post offices and money exchanges in tracking down a thief who stole foreign currency from a Ponteland home.

Around 500,000 Leones, the currency of Sierra Leone, were stolen during the house burglary on Monday, November 7.

The amount of Leones that can be taken out of Sierra Leone is limited and they cannot be bought in the UK.

Police believe the thief may have been trying to exchange the money in the region in the past few weeks.

Investigating Officer DC Claire McTear said: “Whoever has stolen the money may not know much about the cash they have stolen and tried to exchange it at a travel agents or bank in the region.

“I’d urge anyone who works in such a place and has any information about someone attempting to exchange Leones over the last few weeks to contact police as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information should call 03456 043043, ext 69191.
