Date set for harassment charge case

A CASE of racially aggravated harassment against a Pegswood man will be heard in the crown court.

Jim Burley, 74, of West View, is accused of sending racially-offensive letters to Sharon Auld between March and December of last year.

Although he did not formally enter a plea at South East Northumberland Magistrates Court on Monday, his solicitor John Monkhouse said he has selected a trial by jury.

Burley, a former Pegswood Parish Council Chairman, was told to return to the Bedlington court on October 17 for committal to Newcastle Crown Court.

He was granted conditional bail.
