A SPOT of evening gardening landed a Morpeth man at the centre of a startling police alert.
After helping out a friend with gardening work on Monday evening, the good Samaritan walked home carrying his branch saw by his side.
But his peaceful evening was rudely disturbed when police came racing to his door.
The bemused resident was told that officers had received a report that he had been seen carrying a knife in the street.
The man, who does not want to be named, said: “I had been helping someone in their garden and walked home carrying a branch saw.
“I carried it discreetly and was surprised that anyone should have thought I was carrying a knife.
“Police officers visited me at home and I showed them the branch saw. I was advised to carry it in a bag in future.”
A Northumbria Police spokesman confirmed that officers received a report on Monday evening of a man carrying a knife in the West Park area of Morpeth.
He added that after making inquiries they found out who the report had been about and went to his home. Following a discussion, which included the man showing them the branch saw, no further action was taken.
