POLICE have released a CCTV image to try to identify a suspected Ponteland shoplifter.

Officers are appealing for members of the public to contact them if they recognise the man, who is wanted in connection with the theft of two bottles of wine from the Ponteland Co-op store on Friday, October 15 last year.

East Tynedale Neighbourhood Inspector Kevin Oates said: “Shoplifting is a crime that causes a lot of problems for local businesses and staff, as well as affecting the wider community.

“Officers work with staff and security in local shops and have been carrying out patrols and visits to local businesses affected by shoplifting in East Tynedale.

“They have made over 30 arrests for shoplifting in the area this year. One man is currently serving a prison sentence for recent crimes and others face the possibility of fines, imprisonment or ASBOs for shoplifting offences.

“If criminals come to Tynedale expecting to shoplift they can expect similar punishments.”
