THERE’S plenty of horsing around at Northumbria Police to bring its latest recruit up to the mark.
Four-year-old Irish sportshorse Paxton has joined the force’s Mounted Section and is now being put through his paces to prepare him for duty.
He is the youngest member of the section and at 17 hands tall is still growing.
Sgt Andy Cross said: “He is the youngest horse we have ever bought and is still a baby really. Training him will be a very gradual process and he has a lot to learn, but the advantage is that he is young enough not to have got into any bad habits.
“We are introducing him slowly to all the things he will have to face and the obstacles he will come up against, such as buses and cars and loud noises. He’s been out among the traffic and soon we’ll let him stand and watch the public order training to see how he reacts.
“If his training goes according to plan he should be out policing high profile football matches by next year.”
