POLICE are appealing for witnesses after an incident on the A1 left six cars damaged.
At 3.50pm on Saturday police received a number of reports of debris in the road, on a stretch of the A1 dual carriageway, northbound, just after the Morpeth turn off.
Motor Patrols officers attended the scene and found a number of large wooden railway sleepers had dropped off the back of a vehicle and onto the dual carriageway.
Although no collisions were caused by the falling sleepers, six vehicles were damaged.
The sleepers were approximately five foot long and were removed by the Highways Agency.
Motor Patrols PC Andrew Brown said: “I’d appeal for anyone who was travelling north on the A1 near Morpeth on Saturday afternoon and who saw the incident happen to contact police as soon as possible. I’d also appeal for anyone who may have seen a lorry, truck or a flat bed carrying railway sleepers travelling on the A1 around the time of the incident to get in touch with any information they might have.”
Anyone with any information is asked to contact Northumbria Police Motor Patrols on 03456 043043, ext 69191.
