Slight rise in drink driving

MORE than 500 drivers were pulled over by police in a month-long campaign.

A total of 543 drivers were stopped and tested across the Northumbria Force last month as part of a summer drink-driving campaign by the Association of Chief Police Officers.

Of those, 98 (18 per cent) failed a breath test, refused to take one or failed to provide a sample. It compares with 266 drivers who were tested last June, of which 42 (16 per cent) failed, refused or did not give a sample.
