A PONTELAND supermarket has thanked its customers for helping to feed animals in need over the festive and New Year period.

A wheelie bin was placed at the front of the Sainsbury’s Ponteland store for shoppers to give donations of pet food to the Newcastle Cat and Dog Shelter.

The scheme was so successful that the bin had to be collected three times.

Store Manager Vicki Mains said: “It is nice to know that the residents of the Shelter enjoyed a happy Christmas and we hope that some may even have found new homes to start the New Year in.”
