A CAR dealership group has set off a £10,000 charity drive to support local causes.

Benfield Motor Group, which has an outlet in Morpeth, has pledged the sum to be shared between three worthy causes following an online vote.

Social network users can nominate a charity to receive the cash via Benfield’s Facebook page, giving a personal reason as to why they think it deserves it.

Ten finalists will be selected by The Benfield Charitable Trust, which will go into a Facebook public vote during October.

The winner will receive £7,000, while the charity coming second will win £2,000 and there is £1,000 for third place.

Benfield Chief Executive Mark Squires said: “We already donate five percent of our profits to worthy causes every year, but we have always selected the recipients in house.

“We wanted to engage with our customers and local charities on an open platform like Facebook to ask them which charities they would support and why.

“As a result, we hope to find out about the great work being done by lots of charities across our region and give our Facebook fans the chance to pick the winner of this special pot of cash.

“We also realise how hard it is for people to make donations in these difficult economic times and this is a way people can pledge their support with just the click of a button and raise awareness for their chosen charities.”

To nominate a cause visit www.drivebenfield.com or www.facebook.com/drivebenfield by September 30.

Voting for the finalists runs throughout October.
