At a time when it can feel like the character of Morpeth is under constant attack by inappropriate development and the closure of established family businesses, there is now a small piece of welcome news.
The developer of the iconic Smail’s shop in Bridge Street has pledged to retain the much-loved frontage and original J Smail and Sons signage as part of the redevelopment.
Credit is due to the developer for taking this action following the intervention of Morpeth town councillor Johnny Wearmouth and many local people through the Morpeth Matters Facebook page.
If only all of the potential developers in Morpeth would show such respect for the character of the town.
