Digging deep for Paralympic bid

A FUND-RAISING event in aid of a Paralympic hopeful will take place at Ellington Village Hall and Library on Saturday.

Caroline MacDonald suffers from a severe form of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and has been unable to walk since 1996.

She still managed to keep fit through playing a range of sports and after joining a rowing club, found she had a natural talent.

Mrs MacDonald, who lived in Ashington until she married, has won two British indoor rowing titles and she is hoping to qualify in September for the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.

Family and friends are trying to raise £960 to buy a specialist rowing machine for her home, which would save 300 miles a week in time and fuel.

The Ellington event, which starts at 2pm, will include face painting, pony rides, a cake stall, nail art, raffle, tombola, books, bric-a-brac and refreshments.
