Drivers have been warned of roadwork disruption off the A1 at Stannington.
Work began this week to re-surface the roundabouts and entry and exit slip roads at the Stannington Interchange.
There is no access to either of the two roundabouts or the slip roads between 8pm and 6am while the work is carried out.
It is expected to take 11 days.
Diversions are in place and the A1 itself is open throughout the scheme.
Highways Agency Project Manager Nicholas Adshead said: “This re-surfacing work has been planned overnight to minimise disruption and to take place when traffic flows are at their lowest.
“Drivers are asked to plan their journeys and to follow the signed diversions.”
The Highways Agency has issued safety advice around roadworks, including keeping to the speed limit, getting in the right lane in good time, concentrating on the road ahead rather than the work, being alert for works’ traffic leaving or entering the area, keeping a safe distance from other vehicles, observing all signs and being aware of road workers.
