AN application by a Morpeth supermarket to extend its alcohol licensing hours has been withdrawn.
Morrisons had submitted a bid to vary its premises licence to sell alcohol from 6am to 11pm, seven days a week, which sparked concern among local councillors.
A meeting of Northumberland County Council’s Licensing sub-committee was arranged for Morpeth Town Hall, but the timing of the hearing (after Christmas and New Year) was the key factor.
A company spokesman said: “We wanted the changes in place in time for the festive period, which is our busiest time of the year.
“As the hearing was set for January, we decided it wasn’t applicable to go ahead with the application.”
A county council spokesperson said there is a national process to follow for applications to vary a premises licence and the meeting date was set once this was carried out.
