Driver who died in fatal crash identified

He was Thomas Gill, 84, from Newcastle.

Mr Gill was driving a VW Golf which was involved in the collision with a van and an Isuzu pick-up on the A696 north of Ponteland, shortly before 3pm on Friday.

Emergency services attended but Mr Gill was pronounced dead at the scene. The occupants of the other vehicles suffered minor injuries.

The road was closed for around four hours to allow officers to deal with the incident and diversions were put in place.
