For once, the boot was on the other foot when the Early Birds presented a cheque for £700 to the Morpeth Lions Club.

Usually, the swimming club – which has been in existence for 21 years – receives a cheque from the Lions for its nominated charity (Great North Air Ambulance) following the LionSwim event.

Early Birds Swimming Club secretary Jean Robson said: “Over the years, we have accumulated funds to the extent that the members expressed the wish to distribute them to nominated causes.

“Morpeth Lions Club was selected together with the MS Society, Mind, Operation Smile and Guide Dogs. We know that Morpeth Lions supports many local needs and look forward to hearing how these funds have been allocated.”

Morpeth Lions President Geoff Bushell said: “The club is extremely grateful to the Early Birds members, with whom we have had a long association, for their generosity. They can be assured that this money will be well utilised within our community.”

The Early Birds swim on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8am to 9.30am at the Riverside Leisure Centre in Newmarket, Morpeth.
