A GENEROUS Ponteland student has lopped the locks all in the name of fund-raising.

Northumberland College student Tom Grantham, 32, has been growing his hair for 11 years.

But Mr Grantham, who studies renewable energies at the Kirkley Hall campus, decided to give in to gentle persuasion from fellow students and have his dreadlocks cut off in aid of Comic Relief.

The big chop raised a total of £300 for the charity.

Other fund-raising events at the college included students dressing in pyjamas, selling cakes, raffles, sponsored silences, students dyeing their hair red and giving up mobile phones for the day, and a sponsored leg wax by student Aiden Marshall.
