STUDENTS across Northumberland have achieved top class GCSE results.

The figures show 57.3 per cent of students gained five or more A* to C grades including English and maths.

Not only is this number up by three percent on last year, it represents the county’s best ever results.

And 83.7 per cent of students achieved five or more A* to C grades, which was also a big improvement on 2010.

Northumberland County Council Director of Children’s Services Paul Moffat said: “We are delighted by these results. I know our staff in schools have worked hard to ensure all students achieve their potential and I would like to thank them for their hard work and congratulate the students on what they have achieved.

“We will continue to work with schools and academies to support future cohorts of students.”
