Protecting the reds

MORPETH and District Red Squirrels group was highly commended in the Love Northumberland Awards.

The voluntary group, which works to protect native red squirrels, was recognised in the Best Coast or Countryside Project category.

Members provide squirrel feeders, carry out grey control and look after hurt or orphaned reds to release them back into the wild. The group has also helped Woodhorn Museum and Wallington to protect their squirrels.

Joint Chairman Sue Mitchell said: “This award is recognition for all those people who have worked so hard to help protect the red squirrels in our area.”
