Fee call rejected

CALLS to set a small fee for the Mayor of Morpeth to attend business events have been rejected.

Members of Morpeth Town Council were asked to consider the charge following current Mayor Ken Brown’s opening of The Electrical Wizard Wetherspoon’s pub in the town.

Coun Nic Best said: “Do we think we should have a cost to commercial organisations when they have a civic opening? I wonder if in future we might consider making a small charge for a commercial operation.”

However, the council said such events help to foster good relations between the authority and businesses within the town and should be regarded as part of the Mayor’s duties.

Coun Brown said: “My own reaction is that these things are seen to be encouraging business and trading in the town, which is important.”
