Morpeth will be full of colour from Saturday when the town centre Christmas lights are switched on.

There will be carols on the Market Place, led by the Star Tenors, from about 4.15pm. Ellington Colliery Band will accompany the singing.

Following a Christmas address at 4.50pm, Morpeth Mayor Andrew Tebbutt will invite a special guest to press the button to turn on the display.

There will be festive bell-ringing by the Clock Tower bell-ringers afterwards.

A range of stalls will be in place in both the Corn Exchange and Ballroom of Morpeth Town Hall during the Mistletoe Fair, which is also taking place on Saturday (11am to 5.30pm).

A special treat for children comes in the form of Santa, who will be in the building between 1pm and 4pm. In addition, there will be a roundabout attraction on the Market Place in advance of the lights switch-on programme.

Representatives of Contact Morpeth Mental Health will be carrying out a street collection in the town on Saturday as well.
